THE BOY WHO GOT STUCK INSIDE A BOOK
He wiggled in the classroom.
He wiggled on the baseball field.
He wiggled at the kitchen table.
Then...he read a book
and his body was quiet.
With every page,
his brain buzzed with endless adventure.
The boy ate cheese on the moon.
With every page,
he heard tale of untold stories.
The boy learned to fight dragons.
With every page,
there was endless possibility.
The boy paddled over a waterfall.
When he turned the last page,
he sat on a rock,
in the middle of a river,
with pinched yogi hands,
closed his eyes,
and listened.
Words floated in the air and captured his imagination.
Words wrapped around him and gently hugged.
Words bounced between trees and cloud…
reminding him to expect the unexpected.
Beyond the watery gurgles,
he could hear his name: Sam, Sam, Sam!
The boy wondered:
How do I get out of this book?
When he opened his eyes,
he knew what to do.
The pages of a book are a powerful tool,
flat or folded.
Page by page,
he folded his way home.
He folded a paper boat
and crossed the river.
He folded a paper balloon
and floated past the sleeping dragon.
He folded a paper airplane
and flew to the moon.
With his hands up,
holding the book open,
lifted over his head,
the boy jumped from the moon,
floated down to earth,
landed on the roof,
climbed in an attic window,
crawled into bed,
tucked under the sheets,
and fell asleep.
The house was quiet,
the boy was quiet.
His dreams were loud,
in his dreams...he wiggled.
FROM THE AUTHOR: My son loves to snuggle but...he wiggles too much. This used to be a problem at school, at home and in sports. He is fun to be with, really interesting to talk to and a talented athlete. He has a great energy that is surprisingly focused when he has something to do. He has learned a love of reading that is out of control. When he reads, his body stops wiggling and his brain starts buzzing. He says that reading helps him feel calm. Now we are trying to teach him to stop reading when the teacher is talking or when he is crossing the street on the way to school. If he could read a book while playing tennis…he probably would.
