THE STRANGE & BEAUTIFUL SCIENCE OF UNICORNS

Hello. I am a unicorn.

I live in a colorful world,
mostly pink and purple,
with a little bit of gold.

In my world,
trees grow candy apples,
clouds are made of marshmellow
and river rocks are jellybeans.

In my world,
no grown-ups are allowed.
They can’t see us,
because they don’t believe in unicorns.

Even if you do believe
in the middle of the night,
you might need a flashlight,
unicorns don’t glow-in-the-dark!

You may not now this,
but not every one-horned creature is a unicorn.

The narwhal’s horn looks like an eye,
it can’t see but senses when fish swim by.

The rhino’s horn looks like a nose
but it can’t smell roses but it digs for bugs.

These creatures are wonderful
but they don’t have what I have,
my one-horned magic is like no other.

I can blow bubbles with my horn.

The bubbles float up
and disappear,
as sunlight moves quietly,
in and out.

If I look directly at the sun,
I sneeze glitter!

Each piece of glitter is a mirror,
reflecting light
and making everyone smile.

Wait - glitter makes people smile?

Well…things that sparkle make people happy
and happy people smile.
Sparkles decorate my unicorn world,
until the first drop of rain.

When the rain falls,
the glitter stops sparkling
and that’s when I start dancing.

If it is rainy and sunny,
I dance on rainbows.

Wait - you can dance on rainbows?

Well…unicorns can!
A rainbow is made of refracted light.
You can see it,
but you can’t touch it.

When the sun is behind you
and the rain is in front of you,
sunlight bounces in and out of a raindrop
and is separated into seven colors
Two of them are blue, so
get your crayons ready!

If you believe,
then I dance and glitter sparkles.
until it rains again.

That’s the science of unicorns,
a little bit strange and always beautiful.
